Ride along Brazil’s Stunning Atlantic Coastline On Horseback

Explore the pristine beaches, towering dunes and tropical fishing villages of Brazil’s spectacular Alagoas coastline on this unforgettable coastal horse trail.

The Coconut Trail ride is a unique horse riding holiday in Brazil, offering adventurous riders the chance to explore one of the country’s most beautiful and undiscovered coastlines from the saddle. Set in the northeastern state of Alagoas, this horseback adventure takes you through a remarkable variety of landscapes, from pristine beaches and colourful sea cliffs to mangrove forests, rolling dunes and pockets of Atlantic rainforest.

Over six days of riding, you’ll follow remote stretches of coastline, cross rivers, and travel through traditional fishing villages, covering ground best explored on horseback. Long canters along firm sand, refreshing swims in the Atlantic Ocean, and ever-changing scenery make this one of the most rewarding horse-riding experiences in Brazil.

Your mount for the journey is the Mangalarga Marchador, Brazil’s renowned native breed. Known for their comfortable gait, stamina and sure-footed nature, these horses are perfectly suited to the varied terrain and make covering long distances both enjoyable and effortless. Along the way, you’ll encounter a variety of coastal birdlife and experience the rich natural environments that make this region so special.

This ride is best suited to intermediate and experienced riders who are confident at all paces in open country. A support vehicle transports your luggage between overnight stops, while each evening you’ll relax in charming beachfront pousadas and beach houses, enjoying fresh local cuisine and warm Brazilian hospitality.

The adventure concludes in the historic colonial town of Penedo, located on the banks of the São Francisco River. Combining exceptional riding, stunning coastal scenery, authentic culture, and comfortable accommodation, this horse-riding holiday in Brazil offers a wonderful way to discover a lesser-known corner of the country.

AN IDEA ON WHAT TO EXPECT

Please note that the itinerary is intended as a guide and should not be considered an exact timetable. The route may vary depending on local conditions such as tides, weather, trail conditions or unusually high temperatures. Any adjustments will be made by your guides to ensure the best possible riding experience and the safety and comfort of both riders and horses. As this is an adventurous horseback journey, a degree of flexibility and an adventurous spirit are very much part of the experience.

Your adventure begins in Maceió, the vibrant capital of Alagoas. There is no set arrival time, allowing you to arrive at your leisure and settle into your hotel. In the late afternoon, meet your guides and fellow riders for welcome drinks and a briefing on the exciting week ahead. Overnight in Maceió.

After breakfast, transfer to Jequiá Beach to meet your horses and begin your coastal riding adventure. The trail follows a spectacular stretch of deserted shoreline framed by coconut palms and colourful sea cliffs. Your destination is the beautiful Marapé Dunes, situated between the river and the sea. Here, you’ll enjoy a boat excursion through the mangroves and have the opportunity to swim in both the river and the warm Atlantic Ocean. As the sun begins to set, settle into your beachfront pousada overlooking this remarkable landscape.

Wake to beautiful coastal views before setting off along another remote stretch of shoreline. Today’s ride passes coconut groves, Atlantic rainforest and pristine beaches, with offshore reefs visible from the saddle. Your destination is Pontal do Coruripe, marked by its iconic lighthouse and inviting turquoise waters. Enjoy a refreshing swim in the sea before settling into your pousada for the evening.

Today brings one of the most adventurous sections of the ride. Heading south along the coast, you’ll reach the mouth of the Coruripe River, where you’ll cross with the horses before continuing along a series of wild, deserted beaches. Along the way, stop to cool off in the ocean and enjoy refreshments provided by the support team. The route passes small fishing communities before reaching one of the ride’s most unusual landmarks, the wreck of the Swiss cargo ship Stockholm resting on the beach. Arrive at your beachfront pousada in time for a well-earned Caipirinha and sunset by the sea.

Today’s ride ventures inland to explore one of the region’s most unique ecosystems. Leaving the beach behind, you’ll ride through a protected dune complex offering spectacular views across the coastline and surrounding countryside. The route continues through coconut plantations and small rural villages before returning to the beach. The day concludes with the opportunity for exhilarating canters along the shoreline before returning to your beachfront accommodation for a second night.

Departing from the fishing village of Pontal do Peba, today’s ride explores a landscape of dunes, coconut groves and protected coastal habitats. This region supports a variety of birdlife and native wildlife, which may be spotted along the way. The journey concludes at a traditional coconut farm, where you’ll spend the night glamping beside a peaceful river lined with swaying palms. This unique riverside setting provides a memorable change of pace from the coastal accommodation of previous nights.

Your final riding day is packed with memorable experiences. Ride through coconut forests and across vast dune systems before reaching the mouth of the mighty São Francisco River. Along the way, pass through the historic Quilombola community of Pixaim, founded by descendants of escaped slaves. At the river mouth, enjoy the chance to swim with the horses before boarding a boat for a scenic journey along one of Brazil’s most important waterways. Following a leisurely riverside lunch, continue to the charming colonial town of Penedo, where you’ll spend your final evening.

After breakfast, explore the historic centre of Penedo, one of the most attractive colonial towns in northeastern Brazil. Wander through streets lined with beautifully preserved churches, convents, theatres and historic buildings that reflect the region’s rich cultural heritage.

Later, transfer back to Maceió, stopping for lunch along the way. As your coastal horseback adventure comes to an end, take with you memories of deserted beaches, endless coconut groves, warm Atlantic waters and unforgettable days spent exploring one of Brazil’s most spectacular coastlines from the saddle.

Please do not book your departure flight from Maceió before 8 pm. Many guests choose to spend an additional night in Maceió and depart the following day, allowing for a more relaxed end to the journey.

THE DESTINATION

Alogoas

Alagoas is one of Brazil’s most beautiful and least-discovered coastal regions. Located on the country’s northeastern coastline, it is renowned for its pristine beaches, swaying coconut palms and warm Atlantic waters. As Brazil’s largest coconut-producing state, coconut plantations dominate much of the landscape, giving the Coconut Trail Ride its name. Beyond the beaches, Alagoas is a region of colourful sea cliffs, vast dune systems, mangrove forests and remnants of Atlantic rainforest, while traditional fishing villages offer a fascinating glimpse into a way of life that has changed little over generations

Penedo

Penedo is one of the oldest and most charming colonial towns in northeastern Brazil. Set on the banks of the mighty São Francisco River, its historic centre is filled with beautifully preserved churches, convents, theatres and grand colonial buildings that reflect centuries of Portuguese and Dutch influence. As the final destination of the Coconut Trail Ride, Penedo offers a fascinating cultural contrast to the wild beaches, dunes and coastal landscapes explored throughout the journey. Its riverside setting, rich history and excellent seafood make it the perfect place to celebrate the end of an unforgettable adventure.

HOW WE CARE FOR OUR HORSES

Our horseback adventures are hand-picked for their quality and care of their horses. Here’s how the horses at [ OPERATOR / CAMP NAME ] are kept in tip-top shape for your safaris. The horses are on top of the hierarchy and receive very special care:

The horses are groomed and checked for any injuries twice a day
They are fed hard feed two to three times a day as required and have access to grass throughout the day (when not on safari) and throughout the night
All the horses have dedicated rest days each week, have time off between each safari and have a varied exercise program that includes trails, schooling, lounging and groundwork to keep them fit, happy and healthy
The horses live out in a herd environment, allowing them to live as naturally as possible
Most horses are barefoot where possible and the farrier comes every 4-6 weeks to ensure their hooves are in the best condition
Saddles are well fitted, and checked regularly
Each horse has their own bridle which is checked and cleaned daily
